Located in the southern part of Alsace and protected by the highest summits of the Vosges mountains (the "Grand Ballon" and the "Petit Ballon"), the Grand Cru Vorbourg benefits from a sunny microclimate. The term "Vorbourg" is a corruption of "Vorberg". Thus describing the geographical aspect of this hillside, i.e. the Vosges-foothill in the region of Rouffach. The soil (clay and calcareous) is covered with a sheet of loess on the down-side. The slopes face south to south-east.

When the Heddon Bishop of Strasbourg founded in 765 the convent of Ettenheimmünster, it bequeathed to it ancestral vines of Vorbourg from Rouffach. The Eschau foundation also received from the Bishop some beautiful vineyards from Vorbourg. All these gifts, formerly facts, refer to the secular vines of the area of Rouffach. According to the historian Théobald Walter, there was almost no religious foundation which did not collect some interest of the work of the Rouffach inhabitants.
The parcels of the estate are located just 500 meters away from the Clos Saint Landelin but the more clayey soil gives differents types of wine : the wines from the Vorbourg have more body and more fatness.
The grapes planted are the riesling, the gewurztraminer and the pinot noir (pinot noir “V”). The wines express elegant fruit aromas, with a good balance between richness, nice acidity and profoundness. The sunshine in the later part of the season favours the development of botrytis (noble rot).
